Welcome to the Richmond Grand Prix

The finale of the British Cycling Premier Calendar elite road race series took place at Richmond on Sunday 21st September.

In stark contrast to last years race, the sun was shining and smiles were all around as the riders formed up and rolled into Richmond Market place for the start. The crowds were in great spirits as the series leaders were called to the start line and a massive cheer started the race.

The route of the Richmond Meet Grand Prix took in a 55 mile loop up Swaledale, featuring the climb of the Butter Tubs pass, returning down Wensleydale to complete three 10 mile laps of the gruelling Waitwith circuit finishing in Richmond Market Place.

The race was impeccably organised by Geoff Lloyd who unfortunately took ill and could not attend on Sunday. He was greatly missed but the event team headed by James Hall, pulled together and the race was a glorious success. The route was a big hit with everybody (maybe not all of the riders would agree) and the ambition of the Richmond Grand Prix was clearly demonstrated.

The rider interviews can be found here.

The event will be televised by Cycling.tv for broadcast by British Eurosport and Richmond Cycling Club are actively looking to develop partnerships to support the event in 2009 and beyond.
